Agerola is located in the middle of a wide green valley, and is approximately 600 meters above sea level. Agerola, is largely surrounded by natural forests, and offers its visitors amazing views of the surrounding mountains, and beautiful Mediterranean Sea.
The name Agerola derives from the Latin word "Ager", which means field, this, together with the discoveries of many ancient Roman artifacts, indicates an ancient Roman origin of the settlement.
Agerola, is conveniently located in close proximity to the famous towns of: Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Pompei, Sorrento, and many others. This makes Agerola a perfect location to go on day trips from, and plus, Agerola is also the starting center of many great hikes. The "Path of the Gods", for example, which is the most famous hike on the Amalfi Coast is begun in Agerola.
In the past, Agerola, was tightly integrated with Amalfi, and the other towns on the Amalfi coastline. This was mainly because Agerola's forests were the major sources of wood for the sea republic's ship building, and the town was also known as a producer of fine silk fabric.
Nowadays, with the development of tourism, and new structures, Agerola has a lot to offer to its visitors.
